Many contemporary romance authors today have experienced an increased interest in shorter stories. We’ve moved from big blockbusters – saga type books with tales taking up to 90,000 – 120.000 words or more. Many single titles the traditional publishers requested were this size.
And then the digital world emerged. We skip forward to where lives got too busy for people to spend so much time reading. Now… Indie authors became more powerful, that they were able to make a difference, change the old practices and were happier writing books that didn’t take them a year or more to finish. They needed to produce faster and publish more.
Along came the shorter versions. And the romance readers were happy. They could gobble up stories faster and loved the variety. With the new publishing strategies becoming popular, they had more product than anyone ever envisioned.
Folks began reading on Kindles, Kobos and Ibooks and even those eReaders eventually got replaced by apps on cellphones and tablets. Now access became so easy, that many authors found the readers hungry for more.
Books became novellas and the authors held their breath to see if readers would resist this change.

They seemed to love them. Sales were great, especially for multi-author romance collections. Not only did it lighten the work, but good writers could also produce entertaining stories quicker and easier.
