This is the first book of the Elvis Series, and I absolutely loved writing it… probably because I loved the King, and throughout all those words that torpedoed into my brain, I saw his face. He’d been such a huge part of my early years as a teen and beyond. The very first time I ever felt a crush had been when I was eleven and had gone to the movies and saw Love Me Tender. I came home with stars in my eyes and a big swollen gushy love filling me that never faded.
He’s always been an idol to me. Therefore, when I decided to write a book featuring one of his songs, I started the series with She’s Not You – probably because it was one of my favorite tunes that he sang.
Hearing it again after some time, the words wouldn’t go away. They kept ringing in my head… over and over until I finally sat down with a plot in mind and started the story. It flowed wonderfully and became a Christmas tale which was a lot of fun to imagine – starting off with a pretty child crying in the hallway of Jesse’s apartment. When he stopped to ask what was wrong, she told him, “My mommy’s sick. She’s bawfing…. a lot”. Then she disappeared inside. Now… what was a man to do?
The words of the song – And it’s breaking my heart, cause she’s not you – were perfect to imagine a man still head over heels for his first love and never finding anyone who could match that image.
